What FilmingMap is

FilmingMap is an independent map of where movies and TV shows were really filmed. Every title gets its own page with the real shooting locations pinned to the exact spot, a note on which scene was shot there, a short written guide to visiting, and - where we have one - a photo of the place as it looks today. The homepage puts all 17,408 locations on one 3D globe you can spin, zoom and filter.

It exists because the usual answer to "where was this filmed?" is a forum thread from 2011 or a listicle that says "London". We wanted the address.

Who runs it

FilmingMap is built and edited by Arturas Salivonas, a web developer and film-location traveller based in London, United Kingdom. It is a one-person project with occasional help from contributors who send corrections and photos - not a media company, and not affiliated with any studio, streaming service or tourism board. Editorial decisions, data checks and replies to readers are all handled by the same person, which is why we answer every message ourselves.

The site is funded by advertising and, where clearly labelled, affiliate links to tours and travel bookings. Advertisers and partners never influence which locations are listed or how they are described. See the partnership page for what we do and do not offer.

Where the data comes from

Each of the 1,532 titles on FilmingMap is assembled from several sources, and we treat them differently depending on how reliable they are:

  • Production sources - location-manager and crew credits, studio press notes, DVD and streaming commentaries, and interviews with directors, cinematographers and location scouts. These are our strongest evidence for where a scene was shot.
  • Local reporting - regional newspapers and council film-office notices, which typically record road closures and shooting dates street by street.
  • Open data - TMDB for cast, crew, posters and release data; OpenStreetMap for geocoding and the base map; Wikimedia Commons for openly licensed photographs of the real places, always shown with the photographer's credit and licence.
  • Readers - people who live near a location, worked on a shoot, or have visited and can tell us what is actually there. A large share of our corrections come this way.

We do not copy location lists from other filming-location websites, and we do not publish a location we cannot place on a map. A title with no verifiable locations yet stays out of the globe until it has some.

How a location gets verified

Source first. A location is added only when at least one production, press or local-reporting source names the place. A recollection alone is a lead, not a pin.

Geocode and check the map. The address is geocoded, then checked against satellite and street-level imagery so the pin sits on the building or the stretch of road the scene shows, not on the town centre.

Match the scene. Where we can, we note which scene was shot there and flag the difference between an exterior you can visit and a studio interior or set that no longer exists.

Photograph the real place. 338 locations currently carry an openly licensed photo of the site as it is today, so you know what to look for when you arrive.

Keep checking. Locations are re-reviewed when a reader reports a problem, when a building is demolished or renamed, and when new production material is published.

Corrections and complaints

We get things wrong - a geocoder puts a street in the wrong city, a fan site conflates two shoots, a building changes hands. When that happens we want to hear about it. Send the title, the correct place and how you know to the contact page or email ecobra@gmail.com. Reports are checked against an independent source and the map is updated, usually within a few days; we credit helpful corrections on request.

If you own a property that appears on the map and would like its listing adjusted - for example to say that it is private and should be viewed from the road - tell us and we will change it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is FilmingMap free?
Yes. The globe, every title page and every guide are free, with no account. The site is supported by advertising and clearly labelled affiliate links.
How accurate are the pins?
Each pin is placed on the specific building, street or landmark named by a production or press source and checked against imagery. Accuracy is highest for exteriors and landmarks; for large private estates or long stretches of road we pin the most recognisable point and say so in the scene note.
Can I visit the locations?
Most exteriors are public streets, parks and landmarks. Some are private homes or working businesses - the guides say so, and we ask you to view those from public land and respect the people who live and work there.
Why is a title I searched for missing?
Either it has not been added yet or we have not found verifiable locations for it - studio-bound and animated productions often have none. Suggest it and, if you know where it was shot, tell us the source.
Do you have an API or a data download?
Not publicly yet. Researchers, publishers and tourism bodies can get in touch about access to the dataset.
Who owns the photos and posters?
Posters and stills belong to their studios and are shown for identification. Location photographs come from Wikimedia Commons under open licences, each credited to the photographer with a link to the original. Details are on the credits page.
