Charming, California – the small town SAMCRO would kill for (and regularly does) – isn’t on any map. But the clubhouse, the main street and Teller-Morrow Automotive were all real, physical places you could park a Harley outside. Almost all of it lived in one corner of Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley.
Here’s where Sons of Anarchy was actually filmed, what’s still standing, and what happened when the club went to Ireland.
Where was Sons of Anarchy filmed?
The whole town of Charming was anchored to a studio lot at 8249 Lankershim Boulevard in Sun Valley, Los Angeles. The Teller-Morrow garage, the clubhouse with its reaper mural, the row of storefronts the club rides past in every episode – that was a purpose-dressed backlot at Occidental Studios’ North Hollywood facility, redressed over seven seasons as Kurt Sutter’s fictional Central Valley town.
Around that anchor, the show filmed on location all over LA County: Tujunga and the foothill neighbourhoods gave Charming its residential streets, Santa Clarita provided highways and open country for the riding sequences, and downtown LA filled in everything else. The season 3 Belfast arc really did shoot material in Northern Ireland, which is more than most shows would bother with.
Every Sons of Anarchy location, explained
Teller-Morrow and the clubhouse – Sun Valley
The heart of the show sat at 8249 Lankershim Boulevard, Sun Valley. The garage, clubhouse, boxing ring and lot were a standing set, expanded season after season. It was a working studio property, not a public attraction – and after the show wrapped, the Charming set was dismantled. The block is still there; the reaper is not.
Tujunga – Charming’s neighbourhoods
When SAMCRO rode past bungalows and chain-link fences, that was mostly Tujunga and the northeast Valley – including Valmont Street, which turns up repeatedly as the club’s residential backdrop. The area’s slightly sun-bleached, foothill-town look is what sold Charming as Central Valley rather than LA.
Santa Clarita – the open road
The big riding shots – the pack in formation, engines flat out – were largely filmed around Santa Clarita, whose canyon roads and half-rural highways have doubled for small-town America in a hundred productions. If a SoA shot has golden hills rolling past the handlebars, it’s a decent bet you’re looking at Santa Clarita.
Belfast and County Antrim – the season 3 Ireland arc
For the club’s trip to Belfast, the production filmed real Northern Ireland material – streets in Belfast’s city centre and rural roads in County Antrim and County Tyrone – blended with California stage work. Purists will spot that plenty of “Belfast” is still LA, but the establishing footage is genuine, and Titus Welliver’s accent is doing the rest of the work.
Planning a visit
Manage expectations: the Charming set is gone, so a pilgrimage to Sun Valley gets you an ordinary industrial block with excellent memories. The better SoA day out is a drive – Tujunga’s foothill streets, then out through Santa Clarita’s canyon roads, which are genuinely great riding whether or not a camera is involved. Everything is public roads; the studio property itself is off limits.
If you’re in Belfast, the Cathedral Quarter puts you in the season 3 footprint, and Northern Ireland’s filming pedigree goes far beyond SoA these days – the city page lists what else was shot there.
