A guide to the Star Wars filming locations
From the original 1977 film to the standalone movies and Disney+ series, Star Wars has been filmed across deserts, forests, islands and studios around the world - with the UK's studios at the heart of the saga. Here is where a galaxy far, far away was really shot.
Tatooine: Tunisia
The desert planet of Tatooine was filmed in Tunisia. The town of Matmata, with its underground troglodyte homes, became the Lars homestead - still a working hotel - while the Chott el Djerid salt flat and the oasis town of Tozeur provided the dunes, where the set town of Mos Espa still stands.
Deserts and forests of the United States
Death Valley in California doubled for Tatooine in the original film, while the towering redwood forests of northern California became the forest moon of Endor, home of the Ewoks.
Islands, fjords and salt flats
Later films travelled further afield. The island of Skellig Michael off Ireland became Ahch-To, where Luke Skywalker hid in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. The snows of Hoth were filmed at Finse in Norway, the red salt flats of Crait were the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, and Naboo combined Italy's Lake Como with the Plaza de España in Seville, Spain.
Where it was built: the UK studios
The backbone of every film has been the British studios - Elstree Studios for the original trilogy and Pinewood Studios near London for the modern films and Disney+ series. Locations from the deserts of the UAE (Jakku) to Iceland and Jordan's Wadi Rum (Jedha) fill out the rest of the galaxy.
