The fictional town of Neptune – all beach money and class resentment – is really San Diego wearing a disguise. Veronica Mars shot up and down the San Diego coast and its university campuses, turning Southern California sunshine into the backdrop for some very noir teenage detective work.
Where was Veronica Mars filmed?
The series was made in San Diego County, California, standing in for the fictional coastal town of Neptune. Beaches around Oceanside, several San Diego university campuses, and city neighbourhoods supplied Neptune High, Hearst College and Mars Investigations.
Neptune was written as a town “without a middle class”, and San Diego’s mix of oceanfront wealth and workaday neighbourhoods gave the show exactly the contrast it needed.

Oceanside – Neptune High and the beaches
The beach scenes and Neptune High exteriors used Oceanside, up the coast along the Pacific Coast Highway, whose classic Southern California shoreline defines the show’s look.
The university campuses – Hearst College
Fictional Hearst College, where later seasons are set, was assembled from real campuses: the University of California, San Diego, San Diego State University and Cal State San Marcos all contributed their architecture.
Mars Investigations – Normal Heights
Keith and Veronica’s detective office, Mars Investigations, was shot around Adams Avenue in Normal Heights, a characterful San Diego neighbourhood.

Other scenes used central San Diego neighbourhoods such as Banker’s Hill and Core-Columbia, filling in Neptune’s streets, offices and homes.

San Diego is the whole map here: the Oceanside beaches and pier are an easy trip up the coast, the university campuses are open to wander, and Normal Heights’ Adams Avenue is a pleasant strip of cafes and shops where the Mars Investigations exteriors were shot.
