Big Whiskey, Wyoming – the rain-soaked town where Clint Eastwood’s Will Munny does his last terrible work – was built from nothing on a windswept ranch in Alberta, Canada, and torn down when the cameras stopped. Almost everything in Unforgiven is Alberta playing Wyoming, and it won four Oscars doing it.

Where was Unforgiven filmed?
Eastwood shot the film almost entirely in southern Alberta in the autumn of 1991 – the foothills country south of Calgary, where the prairie runs into the Rockies. The whole town of Big Whiskey was purpose-built near Longview, in the historic ranching country around the Bar U Ranch, and the production ranged out to Drumheller’s badlands and the towns of High River and Brooks for the rest.
One sequence left Canada: the train scenes were filmed in Sonora, California, in the Sierra foothills where Hollywood has staged railroad Westerns since the silent era. Everything else that looks like 1880s Wyoming is Alberta grass and Alberta weather – including the storms, which were real.

Big Whiskey – built near Longview, Alberta
The town – Greely’s saloon, Skinny’s, the sheriff’s office where the film ends – was a complete set constructed on ranchland near Longview, in the Bar U Ranch country an hour southwest of Calgary. Eastwood’s crew built it in around a month, shot the film in a famously efficient 39 days, and the set came down afterwards. The land it stood on is private working ranchland; the nearby Bar U Ranch National Historic Site is the public way into exactly this landscape and its cowboy history.
Drumheller’s badlands – Munny’s farm
Will Munny’s failing hog farm, and the stark badlands shooting scene, were filmed in the Rosedale area of Drumheller, in Alberta’s otherworldly badlands 90 minutes northeast of Calgary. It’s dinosaur country – the Royal Tyrrell Museum is up the road – and the eroded hills look properly biblical on film.
High River and Brooks, Alberta
High River, a genuine old ranching town south of Calgary, provided period streetscapes and support locations, and Brooks appears among the production’s Alberta stops. High River has since become a serial screen town – it later spent over a decade as the home of Heartland.
Sonora, California – the train sequence
English Bob’s arrival by rail was shot around Sonora in Tuolumne County, California – home of the Railtown 1897 State Historic Park and its working vintage locomotives, the go-to trains of classic Hollywood Westerns.
Planning a visit
Base in Calgary and make a loop of it: south on Highway 22 – one of Canada’s great drives – through Longview and the Bar U Ranch historic site for the Big Whiskey country, back up through High River, then out to Drumheller for the badlands. Two days does it comfortably, and the scenery needs no film connection to justify itself.
Just know what you’re getting: Big Whiskey itself no longer exists, so this is a landscape pilgrimage rather than a set visit – the hills, the grass and the enormous sky are the co-stars that survived.
