Reign spends four seasons at the glittering, treacherous French court – and filmed almost none of it in France. The pilot was shot in Ireland at some genuinely spectacular locations, and everything after that came out of Toronto, where a Canadian estate and a lot of clever set-building played 16th-century Europe.

Where was Reign filmed?
Two distinct chapters. The 2013 pilot was filmed in Ireland, borrowing real medieval architecture – Ashford Castle in County Mayo and Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin – to establish the look of French court life. It’s the most expensive-looking hour of the whole series for a reason.
Once the show went to series, production settled in Toronto for the full run: stages at Cinespace Film Studios for the castle interiors, with Parkwood Estate in Oshawa – a 55-room mansion east of the city – providing the grand exteriors and gardens. Ontario conservation areas filled in forests, coves and countryside whenever the plot left the palace.

Ashford Castle, County Mayo, Ireland
The castle that sells the pilot is Ashford Castle, an 800-year-old fortress turned five-star hotel on the shore of Lough Corrib. It has played host to everyone from royalty to The Quiet Man’s film crew, and it gives the pilot production value the Toronto stages then had to live up to.
Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin
The pilot’s cathedral scenes – including the show’s grand ceremonial moments – were shot in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin’s thousand-year-old landmark. It’s open to visitors year-round, crypt included.
Parkwood Estate, Oshawa, Ontario – the French court
For the series proper, the court’s exteriors belong to Parkwood Estate, the 1917 mansion of auto baron Samuel McLaughlin in Oshawa, about an hour east of Toronto. Its formal gardens, fountains and stone terraces appear constantly. Parkwood is a serial screen performer – you may also recognise it as Professor Xavier’s mansion from the X-Men films. It’s a National Historic Site and runs regular tours.
Cinespace Film Studios, Toronto
The throne room, corridors, bedchambers and most of what you see indoors were sets at Cinespace’s Kipling Avenue studios in Etobicoke – the same complex that has hosted everything from Star Trek: Discovery to The Handmaid’s Tale.
Rockwood Conservation Area, Ontario
When the story needed wilderness – the cove scenes, forest rides, anything mysterious among the trees – the crew often went to Rockwood Conservation Area near Guelph, whose limestone cliffs, caves and mill ruins look convincingly old-world.
Planning a visit
The Ontario leg is an easy day out from Toronto: Parkwood Estate in Oshawa is the essential stop (check tour times before you go), and Rockwood makes a fine add-on if you want the show’s wilder scenery – it’s a proper swimming-and-hiking park in summer.
The Irish chapter is a holiday in itself. Christ Church Cathedral is in central Dublin, and Ashford Castle is a three-hour drive west – you can visit the grounds as a day guest or commit to a night if the budget stretches. Ireland’s tourism site keeps opening details current for both.
