Netflix’s live-action One Piece had to build a whole ocean world – the Baratie, the Going Merry, a string of island villages – and it did it in South Africa. Cape Town’s huge studios and coastline became the East Blue, with a few far-flung locations adding to the voyage.

The series was made primarily in Cape Town, South Africa, at Cape Town Film Studios, using the city and its coast for the show’s islands and seas. Additional locations included the Canary Islands (Tenerife) and Mexico.

Cape Town – the East Blue
The heart of the production was Cape Town and its enormous film studios, where sets like the Baratie and the pirate ships were built. The South African National Gallery and the city’s coastline feature among the locations.
Tenerife and Mexico
The voyage reached out to Tenerife in the Canary Islands and to Mexico (around Playa del Carmen and Xcaret) for additional island and jungle scenery.
