Good Girls is a Detroit story – the suburbs, the Fine & Frugal, the money that absolutely should not be in that garage. But the show barely brushed Michigan: the pilot was shot in Atlanta, and the series that followed was made in Los Angeles, doubling for Detroit with set dressing and sheer confidence.
Here’s how the show’s geography actually worked.
Where was Good Girls filmed?
The 2017 pilot was filmed in the Atlanta area – including the Doraville side of town – back when the show was finding its look (and Georgia’s tax credits). When NBC ordered the series, production relocated to Los Angeles, where seasons 1 to 4 were shot on stages and around the city’s endlessly flexible suburbs.
Detroit itself appears mostly as establishing shots and references. Everything at ground level – Beth’s kitchen, the grocery store, Rio’s bar – is a California set or location wearing Midwestern winter clothes, which is why nobody’s breath ever fogs quite as much as Michigan would demand.
The locations, explained
Atlanta – the pilot
Episode one came out of metro Atlanta, with locations around Doraville in DeKalb County. If the pilot’s grocery store and streets feel subtly different from the rest of season 1, that’s because they’re 2,000 miles apart – the series rebuilt its key sets in LA to match.
Los Angeles – the series
From the series pickup onwards, Good Girls was an LA production: the Fine & Frugal, the Boland house and the rest lived on soundstages, with exteriors shot around the Valley’s residential streets – including the Chatsworth area – which have played Anywhere, USA for decades. It’s the standard network-TV arrangement: pilot in a tax-credit state, series near the studio.

Honestly, this isn’t a pilgrimage show – its most iconic locations were stages, and the exteriors are scattered ordinary suburbia.
