Fringe is set almost entirely in Boston – the Harvard lab, the federal building, the endless Massachusetts crime scenes. Here’s the fun part: barely a frame of it was shot there. Season 1 is New York wearing a Boston costume, and from season 2 onwards the whole show packed up and moved to Vancouver.

Where was Fringe filmed?
Three cities, one show. The pilot was shot in Toronto (a common move for expensive pilots at the time). When the series was picked up, production moved to New York – stages at Silvercup Studios in Long Island City, locations all over the five boroughs, everything redressed as Boston. Then, after season 1, the show chased lower costs to Vancouver and stayed there for the rest of its run.
That split personality is half the fun of rewatching it: season 1 has unmistakable New York bones (fire escapes, brownstones, Queens industrial blocks), while seasons 2 to 5 have that unmistakable Vancouver look shared by every sci-fi show of the era – which suits a series about parallel universes rather well.
Every Fringe location, explained
Silvercup Studios, Long Island City – season 1’s home
Walter’s Harvard lab, the FBI offices and most season 1 interiors lived on stages at Silvercup Studios in Queens – the same lot that housed The Sopranos and 30 Rock. The exterior of the “Harvard” campus was played by Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, whose brick quads pass for Cambridge surprisingly well.
New York’s five boroughs as Boston
Season 1 crime scenes were scattered everywhere: Harlem, Coney Island, Bay Ridge, Astoria, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the Bronx Zoo, even Central Park’s 97th Street Transverse. The “Boston Federal Building” was the Bank of America Tower on West 42nd Street. Yonkers and Staten Island filled in for suburban Massachusetts. If you live in New York, season 1 is a borough-spotting game.
Vancouver – seasons 2 to 5
From season 2 the show shot out of Vancouver Film Studios on Cornett Road, with the city providing everything else: the Vancouver Art Gallery (a favourite stand-in for grand public buildings), the Orpheum theatre on Smithe Street, and city halls in Burnaby and Coquitlam playing labs, hospitals and government offices. Both universes’ Bostons and New Yorks were assembled from the same few Vancouver blocks – which, again, is very on-brand for this show.
Toronto – the pilot only
The 2008 pilot used Toronto City Hall and the University of Toronto, plus a Hamilton neighbourhood standing in for Baghdad in the opening flashback. Once you know, the pilot looks like neither New York nor Vancouver – because it’s neither.
Planning a visit
For the season 1 era, New York does the work: Pratt Institute’s campus in Clinton Hill is open to wander, Silvercup’s signage is a Long Island City landmark, and the Bronx Zoo and Coney Island are worth a day each regardless of the show. In Vancouver, the Art Gallery and the Orpheum are both downtown, ten minutes apart on foot – between them you’ll have stood where a remarkable amount of Fringe (and half of all network sci-fi) was shot.
