Dead Like Me is set in Seattle – the drizzle, the coffee, the general sense of pleasant doom all fit. But George Lass lived, died and reaped almost entirely in Vancouver, which spent two seasons doing its favourite trick: playing a different Pacific Northwest city an hour and a half down the road.

Where was Dead Like Me filmed?
The show filmed in and around Vancouver, British Columbia from 2003 to 2004 – locations across the city, the University of British Columbia campus, and neighbouring Burnaby and Surrey, with stage work in the Burnaby studio belt. Seattle appears only in the establishing shots; everything at street level is Canadian.
It’s a very recognisable slice of Vancouver-as-America: the same city that carried The X-Files, Fringe and half of genre television, here doing gentle suburban melancholy instead of monsters.
Every Dead Like Me location, explained
Der Waffle Haus
The reapers’ breakfast headquarters is the show’s true main set – and it had more than one life. Exterior work used a real restaurant building on East Hastings Street in Vancouver (later a sushi spot), and the production also built and shot Waffle Haus material elsewhere over the run, including for the 2009 follow-up movie. If you’re in Vancouver, the East Hastings block is the one with the genuine on-screen history.
The Lass family house – Marpole
George’s family home is a real house on Osler Street in Marpole, south Vancouver – an ordinary leafy street that reads perfectly as suburban Seattle. It’s a private home: pavement photos only.
University of British Columbia
The show leaned on the UBC campus repeatedly – the Frederic Lasserre Building, Memorial Road and the sports fields all appear. University campuses are location-scout gold: institutional enough for offices, pretty enough for parks, and UBC’s is one of the most-filmed in North America.
Happy Time and the city’s offices
George’s soul-crushing temp agency and the show’s other institutional interiors drew on downtown Vancouver office stock around Howe Street, with Burnaby and Surrey civic buildings covering hospitals, animal shelters and bureaucratic purgatories as needed – plus the title sequence’s cemetery scenes shot in the Mountain View area off St George Street.
Planning a visit
Everything sits inside an easy Vancouver day: UBC’s campus (worth a wander for the Museum of Anthropology alone), Marpole and the Arthur Laing Bridge on the way to or from the airport, and the East Hastings Waffle-Haus block if you want to complete the set. Nothing here is ticketed or fenced – it’s just a city being quietly famous.
