Where was American History X filmed?
The film was shot almost entirely in Los Angeles – Venice, North Hollywood, Hollywood and downtown – keeping close to the Venice Beach world it depicts. There’s very little sleight of hand here: the neighbourhoods on screen are the neighbourhoods it filmed in.

Venice Beach and the canals – the Vinyard home
The Vinyard family home sits by the Venice Canal Historic District, just off the Venice Beach bike path, and the boardwalk world of the film plays out along the beachfront. It’s the emotional centre of the movie and entirely real.
Venice High School
The school scenes were shot at the genuine Venice High School on Venice Boulevard in Mar Vista – a campus that has doubled for countless teen films over the decades.
North Hollywood – Archie’s Market
The convenience store that becomes the scene of the film’s pivotal violence, Archie’s Market, was filmed on Magnolia Boulevard in North Hollywood.
Hollywood and Fairfax – the apartments
The Vinyards’ later apartment was shot on Gordon Street in Hollywood, with more residential scenes around North Vista Street in Fairfax.

Venice is the whole tour. The Venice Canals are a quiet, walkable neighbourhood a block back from the boardwalk, and Venice Beach itself needs no introduction. Combine it with a wander up to Venice High and you’ll have seen most of the film’s world in an afternoon – all within a compact stretch of Los Angeles.
