Hyosan High School – ground zero for Netflix’s teenage zombie apocalypse – is not in Seoul, and it’s not a set on a studio backlot either. All of Us Are Dead turned a real, disused school building in a South Korean provincial city into one of the most recognisable horror locations of the streaming era.

Here’s where the show was actually filmed.

Where was All of Us Are Dead filmed?

The fictional city of Hyosan is a composite, but the school at the centre of it is real: the production took over a former school building in Andong, a city in Gyeongsangbuk-do province about three hours southeast of Seoul, and rebuilt it inside and out as Hyosan High – classrooms, corridors, the rooftop, the gym. Using a genuine decommissioned school is a big part of why the geography of the siege feels so coherent: the cast were really running down real school corridors.

Beyond Andong, the production shot supporting material in and around Seoul and on constructed sets for the most destruction-heavy sequences – you can’t flood a real school with hundreds of zombie performers and fire hoses every day, even a retired one.

The locations, explained

1

Hyosan High School – a real former school in Andong

The heart of the entire series. The disused campus in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do gave the show its classrooms, science lab, broadcast room and that unforgettable rooftop. The building is not a public attraction – it’s a filming property in a residential area – so this one is for map-appreciation rather than trespassing. Andong itself, though, is a genuinely worthwhile visit: it’s Korea’s heartland of traditional culture, home to the UNESCO-listed Hahoe Folk Village.

2

Seoul and the wider shoot

City material and additional scenes were filmed in and around Seoul, where the production was based – standard practice for Korean series, which shoot the capital for anything urban and range out to the provinces for specific looks a fictional mid-size city like Hyosan needs.

Planning a visit

Treat it as an Andong trip rather than a location hunt. The school building is private and, frankly, looks like every other Korean school from the street – the show’s production design did the heavy lifting. Andong’s actual draws (Hahoe Village, the soju museum, jjimdak – the city’s famous braised chicken) make the three-hour KTX-plus-bus journey from Seoul worth it on their own, with the filming connection as a bonus for fans.
